Rauw Alejandro

Despacito was first released by Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi in the year 2017 and was the number one streamed track in just 6 months. The song was a mix of reggaeton and pop music that not only drew attention to Latin Music but as well reggaeton. In 2015 there were only two predominantly Spanish-speaking songs in Billboard's Top 100 and in 2016 there were four. At the peak of Despacito's popularity in 2017 however 19 mostly Spanish songs made it into the Top 100 In 2020, there were 41 such songs. Following Justin Bieber's bilingual remix of Despacito (2017) famous musicians soon started collaborating with reggaeton performers including Drake along with Bad Bunny on MIA (2018) as well as Madonna and Maluma in Medellin (2019). By 2020 a few reggaeton stars were complaining about their genre's shift towards the mainstream but a new generation of performers, including Rauw Alejandro, sought to continue the evolution of reggaeton. The genre often incorporated electronic dance as well as different forms.
